Creating & Restoring Server Backups

Protect your community against griefing, corrupted updates, or accidental deletions with cloud backup snapshots and instant 1-click restore rollbacks.

1. Pterodactyl Cloud Snapshot Architecture

OrynCloud backups are compressed tarballs created at the block storage layer. They capture your entire server directory—including worlds, player data, configuration files, and plugin jars—without taking your server offline.

2. Creating a Manual Snapshot

  1. In panel.oryncloud.com, select your server and click Backups.
  2. Click Create Backup in the upper right.
  3. Assign a memorable name (e.g., Pre-1.21-Update).
  4. Optional: In Ignored Files, exclude large temporary caches (e.g. logs/*).
  5. Click Start Backup. The daemon processes the backup in the background.

3. Locking Backups Against Auto-Rotation

When automated backup schedules run and your backup limit is reached, Pterodactyl automatically deletes the oldest backup to free up quota.

Lock Critical Snapshots

To prevent a milestone backup (e.g., world launch or major event) from ever being purged, click the three dots beside the backup and select Lock. A padlock icon will confirm it is exempt from automated rotation.

4. Restoring from a Snapshot (1-Click)

  1. Stop your server in the console.
  2. In the Backups tab, click the three dots beside your chosen snapshot and select Restore.
  3. Check Truncate Directory if you want a clean state that deletes existing files before unpacking.
  4. Click Restore. Once finished, start the server.

5. Downloading Backups for Offsite Storage

We strongly recommend downloading your world snapshot to your local PC or Google Drive once a month. Click the three dots beside any completed backup and select Download.
